A course for Proficient Users of English

This course is designed for students who can already follow media and social media content with ease and who can express themselves fluently and spontaneously when interacting in English, particularly in more informal, social settings. This course thus aims at strengthening students’ ability to adjust their communication style to better suit the expectations of an academic audience/readership. Throughout the course, students are encouraged to further extend their academic vocabulary range to enable them to express ideas with more variety and precision. Students work on their ability to produce smooth flowing, well-structured speech on complex topics, including topics relevant to their academic discipline. Students also work on their ability to write a well-organised, coherent text, using a variety of cohesive devices and organisational patterns. By the end of the course, students should be able to draw on a wide range of grammatical and lexical resources to communicate complex ideas in speech and writing, flexibly, effectively, and appropriately.
