Choosing materials and methods

A key element of autonomous language learning is choosing and working with suitable learning materials, methods and strategies. These competencies are acquired and developed bit by bit.

  •

    I can do this

    I want to learn this

    This isn't important for me

I am familiar with a variety of materials and resources for language learning, for example

    textbooks (coursebooks, workbooks …)

reference works (dictionaries, grammar books …)

authentic materials (films, newspaper articles, songs …)

        interactive CD-ROMs

    websites and online resources

    tandem (language exchange partner)

    native speakers

        learning advisors

    other (please specify):

    I can do this

    I want to learn this

    This isn't important for me

In order to achieve my goal, I can choose materials and resources

    on my own

    together with others

with the help of learning tips

        with a learning advisor.

I can choose materials to help me achieve my goal bearing in mind

    my language competencies

    my learning style.

I can choose authentic materials – for example, films, different text types, radio and television programmes – to help me achieve my goal bearing in mind

    my language competencies

    my learning style.

I can choose materials and resources to help me achieve my goal

    for a task

for a series of tasks (for example, a presentation in the foreign language)

for a project (for example, to prepare a brochure about my university or to prepare a report)

for an entire programme of learning.

For further descriptors see completing tasks, monitoring and evaluating.

    I can do this

    I want to learn this

    This isn't important for me

I can try out new, unfamiliar materials and resources (for example, new learning software, new textbooks, working with a newspaper article for the first time)

    on my own

    together with others

with the help of learning tips

        with a learning advisor.

  •

    I can do this

    I want to learn this

    This isn't important for me

I am familiar with different language learning methods and strategies, for example

    repeting words or sentences

    completing grammar exercises

asking questions in order to get explanations

analysing structures and sentences in order to deduce grammar rules

looking something up in a dictionary

searching the internet for words and expressions

    preparing before speaking

        speaking in the foreign language

    reading in the foreign language

completing simulations in the foreign language

In order to achieve my goal, I can choose methods and strategies suited to

the selected material (for example, listening and repeating tasks with a listening text)

the task (for example, when completing a reading comprehension predicting the meaning of new words from the context)

my learning style (for example, preparing a table of grammar rules if I am a visual learner).

For descriptors on working with learning materials and authentic materials, and on using learning methods and strategies see completing tasks. For critical analysis of materials used and methods applied see monitoring and evaluating. Do you like learning together with others? In that case, go to cooperating.
